Happy New Year from Marpo
Kinetics!
In the spirit of the most common New Year's resolution to
exercise more and to lose weight, we decided to explore
Viper's use for cardio workouts. Turns out, this was a
harder task than we thought. No one has ever used rope
climbing as a cardio workout; it has always been a pure
strength workout for those strong enough to be able to do
it. While researching this topic, we came across a very
unique sport and discovered another true fan of the Viper,
whose story we decided to share with you. |

Tim VanOrden, of the
Running
Raw Project, is an athlete in one of the most unique
sports we have encountered - Tower Stair Climbing. Tim uses
the Viper at Gold's Gym Venice ("The Mecca of Bodybuilding")
for cardio and endurance workouts. We asked Tim to tell us
why he chose Viper, how he uses it and how he benefits from
the exercise.
Here is the answer in Tim's own words:
"I LOVE it! I would even go so far as to say that the Viper
was the main ingredient in my 3rd place finish in the Sears
Tower Stair Climb, and my 1st place finish at the US Bank
Center Stair Climb. I use the Viper to build endurance
necessary to pull hard on the stairwell railings for the
entire race.
It's the only machine in the gym that I use. There is
nothing better for complete upper body cardio and endurance
training.
I started with one 8-minute set on resistance level 4. Then
worked up to 10 minutes on level 6 - pulling as hard as I
can the entire time. I would do one of these long sets every
other day.
I am hoping to continue using the Viper as I prepare for the
world championships of stair climbing at the Empire State
Building in February." |

After talking to Tim, we decided to dig a bit deeper
and find out what would a cardio workout on the
Viper do for an average individual.
We enlisted the help of Eitan Gelber, an athletic
trainer at Stanford University and Dr. Robert
Nishime, head physician for the US National judo
team. After further research, including every Marpo
Kinetics team member going through a 30-minute
cardio workout on the Viper, the results were
similar to what one would expect from sports like
rowing, racquetball or rock climbing. An average
individual can expect to burn between 615 and 850
calories per hour using rope climbing as a cardio
workout. |

Cardio Workout
Suggestions |
|
If you already own a Viper but
haven't really experimented with cardio workouts on it, here
are a few suggestions:
●
Set resistance level to EASY (setting 1 or 2).
●
If you work out on Viper (as opposed to Viper LT), set
weight stack to equal your body weight minus 10-20 pounds
(5-10 kilograms).
●
Unless you are an elite athlete like Tim, don't start out
pulling "as hard as you can." You'll burn out very fast.
Pace yourself (just like you would not sprint on a treadmill
for 10 minutes, you don't have to "sprint" on the Viper
either).
●
Try to do a 10-minute set at a moderate pace. |
